We should realize that Homo sapiens is just another species on this planet. We think we are special - "created in god's image" (more likely we created god in our image), chosen people, most advanced life form on earth, etc., etc. In reality we're just another species and we can be toppled from our perch as any other species by events well beyond our control - be it gloabal warming (or climate change), a comet from outer space, or a pandemic - or for that matter our own self-destructive impulses. We think we're special - have superior intelligence - and therefore invincible. But the laws of nature apply to us as they do the rest of the world's inhabitants.
