On the subject of Mealy Bugs Q & A:
While the Bayer Tree & Shrub insecticide cannot be publiclly recommended in
the US because of Federal labeling instructions and licensure, I believe you
may recommend the Bayer Advanced Rose and Flower Insect Killer. The Bayer
site states:
"Bayer Advanced™ Rose & Flower Insect Killer Concentrate may be used to
control insects on container grown ornamental plants outdoors. If the intent
is to treat container grown houseplants, you must move them outdoors to make
the application and allow them to thoroughly dry before bringing them back
inside."
"The product targets: Adelgids, Aphids, Bagworms, Boxelder Bugs, Clover
Mites, Elm Leaf Beetles, Grasshoppers, Gypsy Moth Larvae, Japanese Beetles
(adult), Lacebugs, Leaf-feeding Beetles, Leaf-feeding Caterpillars,
Leafminers, Mealybugs, Mosquitoes, Pillbugs, Sawfly Larvae, Scale Insects
(crawler stages), Spittlebugs, Thrips and Whiteflies."
The Bayer Rose & Flower insecticide must not be used on food plants. The
labeling states that the product can be used in enclosed spaces as long as
the mist is not inhaled. I'm assuming this pertains to greenhouses, but the
instructions to not clarify.
The Rose & Flower insect killer has instructions for mixing up small amounts
of spray, however the product also comes in a ready-to-use sprayer bottle
which will treat up to 35 medium sized plants. This products active
ingredients includes imidicloprid (Merit). Here in the US, a 2 oz. bottle
of dry 75% Merit is priced at about $50.00 and will make about 120 gallons
of spray. The Rose and Flower Insect Killer provides hobbyists with a
convient small amount of "Merit" at a convenient price of about $5.00 US.
