We had a rep from Spectra Pure at our meeting here in Phoenix last night.  On one of the orchid web sites, ( http://www.orchidgeeks.com/forum/newbie-questions/589-tap-water-and-phalaenopsis.html?highlight=chlorine ) someone had claimed that carbon filters did not work very well on chlorine or chloramines.  My comment to him was that if that was the case, then there should be failing RO membranes all over the place.  So I brought up this claim to the Spectra Pure rep.  He said that this was wrong.  That the activated charcoal was very good at removing chlorine, including when chloramines are used.  The charcoal breaks the bond between the chlorine and the amonia that exists in chloramines, but does not remove the amonia.  So, you can see where this leaves aquarium people.  Amonia is deadly to fish, but NOT to orchids.  Cynthia, Prescott, AZ
