Eric,
Your lack of success with DE as a slug
barrier may have been the specific DE grade you used.
There are basically two primary grades
available - a coarse, "sharp" grade that consists of as close to "virgin" diatom
skeletons as possible - complete with sharp protrusions - and a fine
grade commonly used for filtration. The latter has been washed and
beaten up so badly that the vast majority of the sharp spikes and
edges have been ground off.
As the primary controlling action in DE is
as a mechanical barrier and not as a chemical agent (hence the cricket
experiment failure), those smooth particles of the filtration grade as basically
useless against slugs or snails.
