Your lack of success with DE as a slug barrier may have been the specific DE grade you used.
 
There are basically two primary grades available - a coarse, "sharp" grade that consists of as close to "virgin" diatom skeletons as possible - complete with sharp protrusions - and a fine grade commonly used for filtration.  The latter has been washed and beaten up so badly that the vast majority of the sharp spikes and edges have been ground off.
 
As the primary controlling action in DE is as a mechanical barrier and not as a chemical agent (hence the cricket experiment failure), those smooth particles of the filtration grade as basically useless against slugs or snails.
