I think the operative word here for my success with DE is 'LIBERAL'.  The 
floor of the GH is pretty completely covered with a good dusting.  The 
plants under the bench are very dusty when done, and it takes a couple of 
watering to have the leaves look clean again.  So, there is no patch to 
cross over, the slugs and snails are continuously moving on the dust, they 
have no choice.  I also dust an area of bench top if I have seen activity 
there, but this happens infrequently as I usually dust when I notice 
activity on the floor of other insects and prophylactly.
