In February 2002 I was on the road between Moyobamba and Progresso in northern Peru. The road had just recently undergone major improvements. There were large, impressive stands of Phrag boissieranum in bloom above the road cuts. The plants were huge specimens. They were in full afternoon sun, facing west with unobstructed exposure for at least several hours per day. I was told that they didn't grow in the morning sun, they colonized where they would get afternoon light. As we drove, that seemed to be the case. It was the rainy season, so everything was wet.
