Dear OGD's
Here is a more interesting genus. Masdevallia. A high elevation, cool to cold growing cloudforest denizen. I always enjoy getting into forests that have them. Often it is hard to see and find them if the clouds are down to the ground, which happens often. It is an eerie feeling being almost in a white darkness at high noon, not far from the equator, a contradiction in terms, unless you have actually seen them occur. Hopefully while you have the time to be there the cloud will rise off the ground and the sun will peak through giving you the chance to espy a few of these little jewels either in the trees or in dwarf gnarly bushes or on rock outcroppings where you have to climb around to find them, or on the surface of a cliff wall. Many are found in deep mosses or lichens with Lepanthes, Restrepiopsis and Stelis . There are more than 350 variations of them, the majority miniatures, but by no means less decorative than many much larger genera, often with flowers larger than the plants. IOSPE has 270 of them so I hope that I can get you all to send in many of the ultimate 80 to 100 or so species that are not represented. They are listed below.
