Martin,

The registration for Taras was boissierianum x pearcei var ecuadorence. Cash
and Olaf Gruss combined the two distinct names, making ecuadorense a variant of
pearcei.

Ecua-Bess was named in 1991, before the lumping process was begun by Cash in
1994. Note that a registration of pearcei x boissierianum is still
theoretically possible as a separate name other than Taras. As an example, RHS
accepted boissierianum x besseae as Lutz Röllke, then when czerwiakowianum was
accepted as a separate species or as a var of boissierianum, that cross was
accepted as Robert Palm. In similar fashion, besseae x pearcei is named Olaf
Gruss, while besseae x pearcei var ecuadorense is named Ecua-Bess.

Many species that were accepted as separate became lumped together. Depending
on timing of a cross, the named crosses of the now lumped species may have
distinct and different names. Having had in my possession both Ecua-Bess and
Olaf Gruss, plus distinctly different species plants of pearcei and the now
lumped ecuadorense, I get to see the flower differences close up and personal.

So sort out the differences, then sort out the various results one might get
when consulting 5 different taxonomists. How about a cross between pearcei x
pearcei var. ecuadorense? Pick a name, then get it registered as a hybrid? Or
will it be defined as a species plant of pearcei? The RHS gets to choose, one
assumes.

Methinks Mr. Tetzlaff may have forgotten more than either my poor self or your
esteemed person have ever known about phragmipediums. Be careful in specifying
that he made a mistake in naming Phrag. Taras. I do not mean this email as a
flame, but just an explanation. My previous answer was perhaps a poor attempt
to help. So rest easy,
