Iris,
Some of us are long past assuming that anyone is joking
about their methods of improving orchids - or any other
plants! So bizarre are some of the suggested techniques that
it surprises me that nobody has suggested playing music to
them. Or maybe we could try aromatherapy - yes, OK, I really
am joking!
If all these methods are so good it is surprising that
the poor things can survive at all in the real world in
which they evolved. Since most plants in the wild are in
competition with other species. one might imagine that to
isolate them, provide appropriate substrate, nutrients,
light, correct temperature and humidity and a freedom from
competitors would, in itself, be a recipe for success. On
the other hand, what a dull world it'd be without the
occasional leg-pulling! And how much more useful than the
aggro that sometimes leaks into this forum . . or is that
all a leg-pull too?
John Stanley

Some time ago, there was chain of comments about the use of
Horse Manure for Orchid use. I have lost those references
and would like to have an update for that use.
I have a good source of the manure available, but am not
sure whether to use raw (new nuggets) or well rotted. I
recall that the advice was to fill the pot 1/3 full and then
the normal mix on top.
