"a rare... orchid is blooming at the Atlanta Botanical Garden... it is
revolting to smell.

When orchid curator Becky Brinkman first caught a whiff of Bulbophyllum
spiesii [accepted name : Bulbophyllum fletcherianum Rolfe ] this week, the
flower's... perfume reminded her of "roadkill possum with blue cheese."

She notes the scent gets stronger as the sun comes out and the plant warms
up, so the best time to catch its full glory is just before lunchtime....

first time the species has blossomed in Atlanta, although the botanical
garden's specimen is a decade old.

With... 4-foot leaves and a flower cluster the size of a football, the
purple orchid is native to the rain forests of Papua New Guinea... The
garden's collection includes three stinky-orchid species; one is in full
bloom, and another... in the coming days.

these orchids produce a rotting-meat stench"
