"Cai Zhongliang of Changhua County...

spent over 3 years researching butterfly orchids, slipper orchids, and
other flowers and their aseptic propagation before putting one into a
bottle with some growth medium.

... the bottle is sealed with a cork stopper, which avoids bacteria
entering the bottle... it does allow air circulation, and makes the inside
of the bottle become a tiny natural ecosystem... Cai has figured out how to
grow a 15- to 20-centimeter tall "flower in a bottle."

Cai says that the flower in the bottle relies on the medium liquid inside
the bottle to produce its... blooms. All year long, it does not require any
watering or other care, nor is it affected in any way by the outside
environment. The plant inside the bottle can be seen and enjoyed
year-round, as its flowers open and drop. When the bottle clouds up, that
means that the flower blossoms are breathing"
