"Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary...

said Gerald Briggs, who works at the sanctuary admissions desk. "We got a
call from a fellow in Missouri who said he was going to catch a plane to
come down.

"A guy from Tennessee said he was driving. A guy from New York City wanted
to know if it was still in bloom..."

Two bird-watchers... saw the Corkscrew orchid [Dendrophylax lindenii] July
7 while scanning the cypress forest canopy for owls.
...
Friday [13 July], a dozen people with still and video cameras, binoculars
and spotting scopes stood on the boardwalk and took in the flower.
...
"I couldn't sleep last night," said Bridgette Dobrowsky, 62, of Bonita
Springs. "My neighbor brought over the newspaper yesterday, and I looked at
it and said, 'That's a ghost orchid.' I was so excited I forgot to have
lunch. I couldn't wait for this morning.
...
Science teachers Tracy Rice and Randa Flinn of Coral Springs... got up at 5
a.m. to drive across the state with Rice's son Michael, 10, and recent
graduates of Northeast High School in Oakland Park, Catherine Cume, 17, and
Lyndsey Stermer, 18.
...
Michael was a little less enthusiastic.
"It was more than I thought it would be," he said. "But it wasn't worth
getting up at 5 o'clock for." [smile...]

Cume was more enthusiastic.
"I'm interested in science, and I love orchids, so, sure, why not come
over?" she said."
