"the 61st Midyear Orchid and Garden Show of the Philippine Orchid Society
at the Orchidarium Park in front of Quezon City Hall. The event will run
through September 10.

Theme of this year's show is "Responsible Orchid Growing for the Protection
and Conservation of Our Philippine Orchid Species."

... the POS has launched its orchid conservation program in collaboration
with the Philippine Horticultural Society, the Manila Orchidarium, Rizal
Technological University and Gawad Kalinga.

The Philippines... have... 1,000 or more species known, 90 percent are
endemic. Because the country has very high level of biodiversity, many new
species are being found...

An orchid house was put up which will serve as a rescue center for
Philippine species from development sites, logging areas and natural
calamities. The rescued species can then be cultivated and multiplied and
then eventually sold.

Experts from the POS are providing training to the settlers so that they
will know how to take care and propagate the orchids."
