"John Klinger...
orchid... had won a Certificate of Horticultural Merit at the Rogue Valley
Orchid Show in Medford in mid April... according to... Carl Luer...
Klinger's orchid was a new species that had not been identified and named
until now.

"... Luer said... with my permission he'd like to name the orchid after
me," Klinger said.
...
the miniature orchid was officially labeled "t[T]risetella klingerii."...
t[T]risetella klingerii stands almost 2 inches tall and features a
burgundy-hued flower that is... about one-quarter-inch long.

... it's not hirtzii because its antenna is about an eighth of an inch
longer and the hue of the flower is different.

John Klinger... His greenhouse at his home in Green has around 750 plants.
...
Klinger acquired his new orchid through an Internet purchase from Pepe
Portilla, a businessman in Ecuador...

The orchid enthusiast, a Roseburg Forest Products employee who retired in
April 2003, had about 750 orchid plants in his greenhouse earlier this year.
...
while out of town in late April, the climate control system in his
greenhouse malfunctioned and the temperature was at 110 degrees for a
couple of days. About 250 plants died, but the trisetella klingerii survived.
...
Klinger first developed an interest in orchids when he was a teenager...
Klinger collected the plants for several years...
He... returned to his hobby about 25 years ago and has been adding plants
to his growing collection ever since.

He is a member and past president of the Umpqua Orchid Society...
Members of that 40-person group have been giving Klinger some plants to
help replace some of the plants that died in the April heating malfunction."
