"The Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory on Belle Isle was designed by
Albert Kahn and patterned after Thomas Jefferson's Monticello. It opened to
the public in 1904, and in 1953, was dedicated to Anna Scripps Whitcomb,
who left her orchid collection to the City of Detroit. Today it houses
hundreds of cacti, ferns, palms and tropical plants in addition to orchids"
