A clarification on the taxonomy of this species, written by Eric Christenson, is scheduled for publication in the January 2008 issue of Orchid Digest magazine. On the basis of color, morphology, and flower count, he identifies the commonly grown hybrid Coel. Unchained Melody (cristata x flaccida)as often being mistaken for the rare Coel. mossiae.
