"Two... orchid species, one of which is believed to be new to Viet Nam,
were found last month during surveys sponsored by the non-profit
organisation Wildlife at Risk (WAR) on Phu Quoc Island.

Liparis cf. rhodochila Rolfe grows naturally on the Indonesian island of Java.

Calanthe lyrogolossa Reichenb.f. is relatively common and widely found in
Viet Nam, but has never before been spotted on Phu Quoc Island.

Formal confirmation of the identity of these species was made by Leonid
Averyanov of the Russian Academy of Science's Komarov Botanical Institute.

Biologists working for WAR on Phu Quoc Island during the past two years
have recorded a significant number of rare orchids, including two species,
Liparis cf. rhodochila Rolfe and Malaxis calophylla, never previously found
in Viet Nam.
...
Plant specialists are continuing to undertake orchid surveys and research
on the island. An up-to-date checklist of Phu Quoc orchids will be produced
at the end of the project and made available from the WAR website in early
2008.

The WAR-sponsored surveys on Phu Quoc Island are part of a larger
conservation programme begun in early 2007, in collaboration with Phu Quoc
National Park, which aims to protect the island's natural resources."
