Ken, Jean and all

As a member of the AOS technology committee and point person for the
Bulletin Scanning project I'd like to chime in with an accurate update of
this Project.

As stated in prior emails the project was initially approved many years ago
and was the sole project of a single member of the committee. Due to a
multitude of issues the project was essentially abandoned after ~2yrs. The
committee revived the project about 2 years ago. Given the complexity and
enormity (>70,000 pages) of such an endeavor it was decided to farm out the
work to industry professionals. After nearly one year of research a new
proposal was approved by the Trustees. This would include digitally
reproducing all issues, creating a standalone product that could be
searched, as well as creating a web-base search product.
Currently all the issues have been scanned and those images are at Princeton
Imaging for completion of the second part of the project. We are
anticipating having everything wrapped up in the first half of 2008.

I hope this clears up any misinformation regarding this issue.

Best Regards

Thanks Jean! I didn't know Orchidwiz had Bob Betts' picture search on it.
Great to know! It also has the Baker's cultural advice (in case you didn't
know that.)

It was a sad day during our recent show when a show worker felt there was no
value to her 'Orchids' magazine, so she didn't feel bad cutting out some
pictures to put in the display. Which is a pity, because people don't
understand that just because you don't value something today doesn't mean
you won't want it tomorrow. I'm sure I'm not the only one who has gone back
through the annual index to find an article on a subject that I'd overlooked
on the first go-round. Or found an article on a topic I didn't know I
needed to know about until years later.
