I must say I was gratified to read Peter's post, and relieved to know that the passage of time has failed to dull his sharpened tongue.
2008 does indeed promise to be exciting year here in the U.S. as we will select from such a promising field our next Leader of the Free World (copyright pending)! Our current President has set such a high bar in terms of accomplishments that his successor will be severely challenged to attain an equal measure of success. Fortunately, we have no shortage of candidates who are already substantially challenged, so the prospects for an 'American Millenium' are encouraging. Just a few reasons for optimism: The continued resurgence of the American arms industries. There's nothing like eternal war to brighten the prospects for our Merchants of Death. Global warming. We can only hope the scientists are right, as we anticipate the improved climates in our tropical and semi-tropical regions. It's a dry heat. The expansion and privatization of the U.S. prison system. Nothing says profitability like incarceration. We continue to share in the bounty with our allies, via a program we like to call Extraordinary Rendition. The exponential growth of wireless communications. Who would have thought, even ten years ago, that one might work for only pennies a day, yet be able to detonate an explosive thousands of miles away? The export of democracy to former dictatorships. Why let one guy call the shots when there's plenty for four or five, even ten? Hey Pakistan, let's do lunch. As to this wettest-place-on-earth talk, San Francisco used to make that claim until someone suggested that the reference was to precipitation.
