Sounds bacterial, possibly Erwinia or Pseudomonas.  Without culture or  
histopathology, it would be difficult to identify potential pathogens from  
descriptions alone.  Physan-20 or any others like this may help, though I  
wonder if 
any of the antibiotics could be used to save particularly rare or  desirable 
plants.
