"in April... native to New Hampshire... will be appearing on the edges of
forests around the state....
Cypripedium acaule... the state’s official wildflower.

Four other species of Lady Slippers two of them yellow, one pink and
white, and one pink but larger than the official Pink Lady Slipper grace
New Hampshire forests as well. Those four are considered either threatened
or endangered, according to the N.H. Native Plant Protection Act; the less
rare Pink Lady Slipper is labeled as of “special concern.”

Many... believe that means it’s illegal to pick them, but Dr. Sara Cairns
of N.H.’s Natural Heritage Bureau says that’s not so: “It’s a widespread
misconception. It’s legal to pick them if you have the landowner’s
permission.”

But legal doesn’t mean it’s OK. “They don’t last long when they’re picked,”
Cairns says...

A better way to enjoy Lady Slippers... is to buy one that is lab-propagated.
Two places you can find them the New England Wild Flower Society plant
nursery...
www.newfs.org ... and
the Vermont Lady Slipper Company...
