Amazing. I think we all know that truth can wander off and get lost when
a supervising adult does not pay attention. After reading the above
posting, I apologize for not keeping a closer eye on where it was
headed. In many ways it would be easier to just let the rumors exert
their independence and run their course, but I think that it is better
for the orchid community to have at least some factual info regarding
the disposition of the New York International Orchid Show. Thanks to
Marc H. for jumping in before things really got out of hand.
There will be no NYIOS at all in 2008 and I will not speculate beyond
that at this time. I will keep these comments as concise as I can
because I do not want to waste Kenneth's precious space and this is a
very complex situation that cannot easily be explained here. Firstly,
there is no juicy gossip, Rockefeller Center did not "kick us out".
Both, our hosts at Rockefeller Center and the GNYOS chose to call it
quits. Make no mistake, we have all been very proud of what we jointly
achieved but it was clearly the right time. This was a mutual decision
based on an increasing reality that it just was not working for them or
for us. Some of you may think you know the real story or choose to
believe otherwise, but this is the plain truth. Of course this was a
very difficult decision after 27 continuous years, but it was based on
many, many factors-the easiest to focus on and certainly the most
significant of which were financial.
Few people can grasp how difficult and profoundly expensive it is to put
on a show in NYC of the size (and hopefully quality) that the NYIOS has
become. Our hosts were remarkably generous over the past few years
particularly after they came to our rescue after 9/11. But the easiest
way to characterize it is that in the collective sense the show-in that
context-was no longer financially tenable for anyone involved-hosts,
organizers, exhibitors or vendors. We felt it was better for things to
stop and for the Society to reconsider where the event was headed than
to continue even one more year and produce an event that we might have
seriously regretted.
Yes, the Brooklyn Botanic Garden was examined as a significant
possibility for this coming Fall, but it became apparent that there was
just no reasonable way that could happen. Of course not everyone would
have been happy about the show landing in Brooklyn but like many other
locations, we pursued it as a possibility. There have been many
suggested alternatives for future orchid events, venues, etc.; some
obvious, others not so. I can assure you that we have and continue to
consider the feasibility of any number of possibilities but for the
moment I will not speculate and start new rumors.
We all hope a solution can be found, but the best that I can offer is
that if circumstances allow us to reinstitute the NY Show in the future
we will let you know. Finally, this is my best opportunity so I want to
offer my profound thanks to all of you on the list who in any way
contributed as a visitor or participant in our shows over the years.
They have been a lot of fun and let's hope it will happen again soon.
Dave Horak
President, GNYOS
