Since AOS bases its taxonomical calls on the World
Checklist of the Monocotyledons kept by Kew, then your
species is indeed Maxilaria splendens and not Maxillaria
buchtienii. ( It seems that in this case the determination
by Kew was made based on the Nomenclatural rule of
priority.)
This is the Kew dtabase entry
Maxillaria buchtienii Schltr., Repert.
Spec. Nov. Regni Veg. 27: 68 (1929). This name is a
synonym. Accepted Name:
Maxillaria splendens Poepp. & Endl., Nov. Gen.
Sp. Pl. 1: 38 (1836).
There are no records in the AQ Database of an award
to Maxillaria buchtienii. That means it would have
been a first award and your plant should have been
awarded provisionally and taxonomic verification
required. Again , since AOS follows Kew , the name
that will have to be used is splendens even if the approved
taxonomist says Maxillaria buchtienii.
Question: Was the notation made that you needed
Taxonomic identification of the plant? Were you given
the handout explaining how is that done?
The question now becomes if you have a valid AOS award:
1- If the Maxillaria buchtienii was granted a CBR the
answer is not. The rules say that the CBR is only grante
once and to a non previously awarded plant. There are 2 AOS
awards granted to Maxillaria splendens and two awards
granted tp growers of Maxillaria splendens .
2- If the award your plant recieved was a CHM, then te
situation can become iffy. The judges that were part of the
team, will be contacted by the Center ( NOTE I am assuming
they will follow the rules established in the Handbook) ,
will be infoemed of the sopecies id determination and will
be asked if their call for a CHM holds for splendens. That
will require them to evaluate the CBR granted to splendens
('Selby') and to decide that there are quantifiable
characteristics that separate your plant from the 'Selby'
clone.
3- If you recieved a Cultural award ( CCM, CHM) there
should be no problem except the correction of the plants
name. Those awards are granted to you as an exhibitor not
to the plant.
4- There sould be no problem if the award was a flower
quality award. Again the change would be the correction of
the name of the plant
Now watch all the rules to have changed and I will look
like an idiot :).
You can contact Mrs Pam Guist at the AOS [EMAIL PROTECTED]
and check. Of course you should contact the Chai of the
Judging Center that provided the judges for more
information on what will happen.
Hope I was able to help.
