Last year I toured the highlands of PNG for the purpose of observing native
orchids in situ. PNG apparently has a policy of NIL export of plants or
seed.Certainly my group was prohibited from collecting plants for export.
However, I was very disturbed to be told that tourists from Japan have no
problems in importing plants into Japan from PNG, and possibly elsewhere. This
may have resulted in the over-collectioon of endangered species. Is there
anything 'we', as orchid conservationists, can do about this?
