I have a large C. flaccida in flower. The plant has about 40 racemes of 10-20
flowers each, so there could be a thouaand of them if one strains one's
imagination. When unmolested, it makes the house smell of old, much used and
fermenting socks. When watered, this changes to the odour of fresh horse
urine; that of several incontinent and large horses.

I am accustomed to orchids generating bursts of scent when 'rain' falls -
although I am not aware of the mechanism by which they do this - but this
frank stench is new to me. Has anyone else noted it in this species? C.
tormentosa manages similarly to smell of pine, usually in a quick burst, when
it is watered, but this cheese-shop viscosity is incomparable.
