Hi, Stitzelweller, this problem was solved by Phillip Cribb, Mei Sun, and Gloria Barretto in 2004 in the following article:
Cribb, P., M. Sun, and G. Barretto. 2004. Phaius tankervilleae and P. wallichii (Orchidaceae), a pair of confused species. Kew Bulletin 59: 547-554. They are in fact similar, but different species. In summary, P. tankervilleae (not "tankervilliae") has somewhat nodding flowers, with sepals and petals that are brown inside and white outside, and not very pointy. The lip of P. tankervilleae is not deflexed. In contrast, P. wallichii has yellowish, pointy sepals and petals, and the lip midlobe is deflexed. The spur is also shorter in P. tankervilleae. I can send you a copy of the article off-line. -Mario -- Mario A. Blanco Department of Botany University of Florida 214 Bartram Hall Gainesville, FL 32611-8526 U.S.A.
