"Orchid growers are seeking compensation after a new brand of insecticide
damaged their crop.

The insecticide Oberon, manufactured by German chemical and pharmaceutical
company Bayer, was first imported last September, and used by growers to
treat two-spotted mite.

New Zealand Export Growers Orchid Association chairman John van der Linden,
says the company did not provide instructions on how to use the product,
and many growers drenched plants in the spray.

... van der Linden says that resulted in severe damage including loss of
flower colour, damage to pollen, and in some cases loss of all flower
spikes. He estimates 5% of the crop was wiped out.

He says Bayer Crop Science in New Zealand has removed the insecticide from
sale, and the association is seeking compensation from the manufacturer.

New Zealand sells $20m worth of orchids overseas annually, with cymbidium
orchids the main export"
