"Brenda Lihou... distraught after some orchids were plucked from her street
on the Bruce Peninsula.
said the showy pink and white lady slippers will take many years to grow
and bloom again.
...
The Bruce Peninsula is renowned for its array of wild native orchids.
Forty-four species grow on the peninsula, the greatest assortment in one
small area in North America.

The orchids range from the abundant yellow lady slipper to the endangered
eastern prairie white-fringed orchid.

Lihou said she has been protecting two clumps of showy lady slippers in
front of her property for 20 years. The flowers can live up to a half
century, blooming annually in late June and early July.
...
Laura Mousseau, spokeswoman for the Nature Conservancy of Canada, said only
endangered orchids are protected by provincial legislation. The ram's head
orchid, which is being monitored on the peninsula, is considered a globally
rare flower and is protected.

The showy lady slipper is considered locally common in Ontario, she said."
