"Among the most popular orchids in India, are the Coelogyne family [genus].

outdoors...

after flowering well into late autumn, will then rest.
Withhold watering till the new growth appears in early spring...

Among the Cymbe[i]dium family,
the Angelic Adven [???]is a native of Mexico.
It is a winter flowering orchid growing upright with pale yellow petals and
sepals ending in cream coloured lips, spotted with dark red, which gets
denser at the throat.
The Ayres Rock [???] is a dark crimson flower, about 11 cm across, tinged
with white, with a rich dark crimson lip, boldly edged in white. It needs a
supporting cane, as the heavy flowers can snap the spike. The flowers last
8-10 weeks, and it is advisable to remove the spike after the last flower
has been open for ten days, thus reducing the strain on the plant during
new growth.

Cymbidium devonianum originates from the Himalayas.
The miniature green flowers, speckled with red, a triangular lip, clouded
with purple, differs from the conventional cymbidium.

The Eburb[n]eum was discovered in the 1820s’, by the botanical explorer
William Griffths, in the Khalsa hills in north India. Ivory in colour with
a deep yellow band in the middle of the lip, it is the first hybrid
cymbe[i]dium to be raised in cultivation.

Cymbe[i]dium are in high demand as cut flowers, and to achieve regular
flowering they should be repotted yearly.
They grow well in large beds, and flower more profusely than the potted ones.

The Masdavallia family [genus] has remarkable uniformity of form and colour
and there are over a [few...] hundred species recorded. Coming from the
mountainous regions of Brazil and Mexico [and many other countries...], the
flowers contour differently. The sepals are larger, with 12” long leaves,
and the 10 cm flower spikes bear a single flower, with tapering sepals,
almost ending in a sharp spike. They come in lilac, crimson, and white. Do
not over water them, or expose them to cold, also repot them regularly.

The Ma[x]illaria Tem[nu]ifolia, a creeping rhizome, grows vertically, with
small oval pseudo-bulbs, and striking bright red speckled yellow flowers,
that require subdued light and dislike too much moisture.

The Medinilla [???] magnifica, a luxuriant orchid from the Philippines, is
a challenge to grow, but is an excellent house orchid, with clusters of
pink pendulous flowers. They bloom prolifically all year round in a shady
location...

Miltonia S[s]pectabilis, from Brazil, has pink white flowers with a broad
purple lip, growing on 10” spikes. Another variety is deep purple, with a
lavender hue at the lip. When attached to a log of wood, and allowed to
grow freely in good light, the plant acquires a yellowish hue.

The Odontioda Dalmer... a hybrid, flowering at various times of the year...
deep red flowers edged in pale mauve, it enjoys cool growing conditions,
good light and regular repotting.

In winter, many orchids rest, and it is essential to keep the soil [medium]
almost dry.

Orchids thrive well, if sprayed with water...
do check regularly for spider mites.

Tigersun is a cross of Oncium tigrinum, a scented Mexico wild orchid
Tigersun Nutmeg, from the Odon[to]cidium family [genus], that withstands
extreme climatic conditions...
bright yellow flowers with brown spotted deep yellow lip...
do not have a definite resting period, and should be watered the year
round, the blooms lasting from 6-8 weeks.
‘Lemon Drop’ Odontoglossum Gold Cup... bright canary yellow [flowers],
with a few golden brown markings on the lip. Water it all year round.

The Ondotoglossun grande, known as the Clown orchid...
Two petals have bright yellow tips, the other four chestnut brown markings...
excessive moisture induces black spotting on foliage.
Once the flowering is over, avoid watering it till the pseudo-bulbs mature
and new growth appears.

... Paphiopedilum hirsutissimum...
from Burma...
mottled fleshy veined leaves nestle in the foliage...
must be handled gently...
Natives of the Himalayas...
Two petals grow horizontally, the third vertical, with bright pinkish
violet tips moving into a blackish purple centre, with a green fringe. The
pouch is mottled with purple dots and the vertical petal has a chocolate
brown centre, in a greenframe...
neat slender foliage, it is ideal for window sills.

Lueddemanniana, from the Phalacnopsis family [genus], has five petals
[tepals] ending in spheres, the white or yellow flowers decorated with
horizontal bars and spots, ranging from deep purple to pink, with a small
purple lip...
flowers... open in quick succession through spring and summer, and when in
bud it likes a warm shady spot.

... Stanhopea tigrina... remarkable for the unusual shape of its flowers
and its adaptability.
The lip hangs down, while the petals converge upwards.
The fragrant flowers break out in fringes of brown with yellow spots, but
last only three days.

The Vanda from Tah[ha]iland...
Ranging from mauve to whites with red speckles, magenta at the base, the
Rostschildrana a rare blue crystalline in texture grows better than
other species.

Vuylstekeara Cambria...
Characterised by large maroon red flowers with a white design on the lip...
ideal plant for beginners."
