"... Seeing the plants in their natural habitat helps us to cultivate them
more successfully at home.''

Bill Dobson became hooked on orchids particularly the Australian natives
when he visited a native orchid show at Mona Vale in the mid-'80s to glean
some information about nurturing several canes of Dendrobium speciosum
(rock orchid) he'd brought back from north east NSW. He'd rescued the canes
from a huge clump that had fallen out a tree and had tried for more than a
year to get them to flourish, until a friend suggested some of the show
exhibitors would give him the right advice.

joined the Manly Warringah Orchid Society...

Dobson said he loved all orchids, whatever their origin, but the Australian
natives... held special appeal for him.
Dobson said he'd been going bush ever since he could remember, into corners
of NSW, Western Australia and Tasmania, but it wasn't until he began the
far north Queensland trips that he realised just how vast and varied
Australia was."
