I'm not certain of the statistic, but I suspect Peter got the 40% from  
a recent survey of American people who thought that "Intelligent  
Design" should be taught alongside evolution because evolution is a  
"theory." Unfortunately, this is an example of the power of religion  
over reason in shaping people's opinions. Unfortunately, also, this is  
not a phenomenon specific to the US.
