A note of thanks to our colleagues who took the time to comment in answer
to my queries about 'dipping clippers' ["Physan 20 or Consan 20 to dip your
clippers in between plants ... so that you do not transmit bacteria or
fungus"]:

"While some of these compounds are supposedly anti-viral, dipping is not a
definite preventive.
You never know if your solution is strong enough or you left it in long enough.
The only absolutely safe method of preventing contagion is to use a fresh
disposable razor blade for each plant."

"A 'dip' that only addresses bacteria and fungus is not effective in
protecting our orchids.
I was much more concerned with the transmission of viruses...
We elected to use a new single edge razor blade for each plant...
this method should be virtually 100% effective against virus, fungus and
bacteria."

"disposable razors are cheaper than a single inexpensive orchid plant and
much easier to manage."
