OK, some progress. I ran Orient again locally (on Windows). Running server.bat from the install directory (bin/server.bat) didn't work. Running from within \bin did work.
However, when running remotely on Centos as a service (orientdb.sh with install path set) in /etc/init.d still does not work. Maybe the common theme is that orient can't find the right path? I checked the logs and there was no error message. No errors on the client either: it also shows green like it worked even in cases when it doesn't.
