I believe you are both right: the digital era HAS upended the 
music/movie/publishing industry but they are not even close to shutting them 
down. But it has made them scramble to compete with free.

And I forget who asked, but yes, there are studies that prove that people who 
purchase illegal copies of anything will buy them if it is convenient and 
readily available (I, ahem, just can't seem to find them...). iTunes is an 
example of a way the industry countered, by making singles available cheaply 
and easily --especially after they removed DRMs. The Amazon Kindle store is 
another. (Hey how many origami books are available there?)
