Many years ago, Alice Gray ask me to fold a Montroll Stegosaurus out of brown 
copy paper. She was going to cover it with graphite by rubbing a pencil on it. 
She said that the graphite would conduct electricity. She knew someone who did 
electro-plating. I do not know any more details about how it was done. The 
final electro-platted model was put on a stand as a thank-you gift to Martha 
Landy when she left the FOCA board.

Hope this points you in the right direction.

As to coating models before you dip them in anything, I have found that tissue 
foil resist opening (For the Most Part - glue helps with rest).
