I'm just wondering about the use of the term *strip of paper* as
related to origami.

How long and narrow should a piece of paper be for us to say that we
are making origami with paper strips?

Good Question Leyla.

I use strips in the ratio of 1:24, for German Stars,
http://www.howtomakestars.com/instructions.html   and i just got some out for
teaching a cross tonight at our local meeting
http://www.oocities.org/salvarolac/craft01b.html   This link is using an actual
palm as a strip

Hence, my experience with strips is with these and puffy stars.

However, when I teach how to make a square from letter sized paper, I have the
students save the extra strip to make a snake.  So, this cut-off piece, at 2.5
x 8.5 I do call a strip.

When 2:1, or 3:1 or even 4:1 ratios are needed, they are by definition a
strip, but I think I consider them more of the starting shape of several
squares in a row.

So where does the reference change? Sadly, I am of no help.  Even the 1:24 is a
series of squares. The cut off strip is not a series of complete squares, and
the puffy stars also do not require whole squares.  Some folds do require an
exact ratio and others do not - maybe there is something there??
