Hello everyone, The USS *Monitor* conservation team at The Mariners' Museum in Newport News, Virginia has issued an origami challenge. The contest has been posted to the conservation blog and is available at the link below.
For those not familiar, the USS *Monitor* was an American Civil War ironclad ship that fought on the side of the Union. It participated in the famous Battle of Hampton Roads against the CSS *Virginia*, a Confederate ironclad, and sank in a storm on December 31, 1862. Approximately one fifth of the ship, nearly 200 tonnes of artifacts retrieved from the bottom of the Atlantic are now being conserved at The Mariners Museum. Normally when we speak of the *Monitor, *we are dealing with very large objects, a 120-ton gun turret, 13-foot Dahlgren guns, or a massive steam engine just to name a few. For our origami challenge, we decided to go small, very small. If you want to see how small, check out the blog. Contest rules are listed and submissions are due by June 30, 2013. http://www.marinersmuseum.org/blogs/ussmonitorcenter/?p=4096 Enjoy, Kate Sullivan *Kate Sullivan* Assistant Conservator (757) 591-7734 [email protected] *The Mariners' Museum and Park* 100 Museum Drive Newport News, VA 23606 <http://marinersmuseum.org/thursdaysbythelake>
