Hi all, Wow, 6OSME (August 10-13, 2014) is going to be fantastic. The deadline for submissions has passed, and one of my colleagues told me his abstract confirmation number (they're given out serially) and, well, let me just say it was WAY larger than the number of submissions to any previous OSME! So it's going to be a really wonderful conference, and I'm hoping to see you all in Tokyo next August.
And if you're sad that you can't go to Tokyo, or you didn't have enough results in time for a submission of your own, fear not: there is ANOTHER scientific origami conference the very next week: the 2nd Symposium on Origami-Based Engineering Design (2SOBED), in Buffalo, NY, August 17-20, 2014. This one is sponsored by the American Society of Mechanical Engineering. I attended the first one a few months ago, and there were some great papers presented. (Of course we expect to see a lot of that work at 6OSME ;o).) If you're interested, details on the conference and submission requirements are on the OrigamiUSA Calendar of Events, see here http://origamiusa.org/calendar and here http://origamiusa.org/calendar-event/2nd-symposium-origami-based-engineering -design. There's further information and links in the downloadable attachment. It's a heady time to be in the origami/technology field! Robert P.S. You might reasonably ask, "why schedule two such similar conferences so close together in time?" They are two entirely separate events with different organizing teams who both started down their respective paths some time ago. I do know that the organizers eventually discussed the matter with each other and looked at various alternatives, and the ASME folks agreed that, since their conference came later, they would hold off their announcement till after the 6OSME deadline had passed. Their abstract due date is january 13, 2014.
