I'm "Creating Origami" (c 1997) I describe 7 different approaches to
design.  The one you describe I dubbed "piecemeal" as in taking a
piece from here a piece from there.

My model "Natasha's Dragon" is an example of that approach where I
basically took two pieces from Montrol's dinosaurs (head from
Struthiomimus tail from Rhamphorhynchus) and grafted them on to a
traditional crane.  (Thanks John!)

My Frost dragon is another example though more complex... and
designing it actually led to the accidental invention of my "Braided
Paper".
