While this doesn't address the chopstick rest question, it might help with translation: the free Google Translate app, available for Android and Apple, lets you scan text in Japanese (or most any other language), and provides instant translation. Its effectiveness on Japanese is amusingly hit-or-miss, but at the very least it will let you make some sense of what would otherwise be impenetrably mystifying. It works surprisingly well on Spanish and other Romance languages. My ability to use chopsticks is such that when I finally get them gripped correctly enough to get food to my mouth, I don't dare put them down again until the meal is over. So I've never had a need for a chopstick rest. Hope this helps - Scott
