The master of paper crumpling: talk & workshop Speaker: Vincent Floderer Speaker Affiliation: CRIMP (Center for Research on Interdisciplinary Modelling with Paperfolding) Host: Erik Demaine Host Affiliation: MIT CSAIL - Theory of Computation Group Date: Saturday, January 17, 2015 Time: 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM Location: 56-114 OrigaMIT (MIT's origami club) is hosting a talk (1-2pm) and workshop (2-4pm) by master paper crumpler Vincent Floderer. Feel free to come to just the talk or just the workshop. Vincent Floderer is a renowned French origami artist (featured in the documentary Between The Folds) who specializes in crumpling paper to produce incredibly organic and lifelike forms. Here are a few examples of his work: http://le-crimp.org/spip.php?page=portefolio2&id_article=2 And here is the man himself demonstrating how to make mushrooms with his signature crumpling technique: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KevS_DMF2Ew Attendance is free of charge for everyone. TALK ABSTRACT The ancient Art of Origami has mutated these last decades into a bunch of innovative spectacular creative, efficient techniques opening wide and exotic research fields. A bunch of new, simple or sophisticated smart processes, are deeply changing practices in design worlwide. Original crumpling techniques developed by Vincent Floderer and the Crimp team since over 15 years lead to a biomimetic approach to folding paper. Connected to main international origami creators and events, the team combines artistry and science expertise to stimulate new angles of reflexions through exhibitions, teaching sessions, training, seminars, etc. During this presentation, dynamic models, from various creators, inspired by natural structures, circulate live in the public and highlight amazing potential applications such as smart packaging, deployable architecture, insulation materials, 3 & 4D printing, soft and self-assembled robotics, nano-structured materials, cryptography, etc. These research tracks have been explored since 2006 in partnerships with several universities in France. An international team is being created. Based on interdiciplinary collaboration, from visual Art to mathematical modelling or via SEM observation and other equipment, several protocols are being experimented with to match many of current ecodesign requirements.
