Gerardo is wondering when it is appropriate to seek permission to teach a
model. Here are my general rules (I've been teaching origami since 2002):
----- If I get an opportunity to teach something in any unorganized,
spur-of-the-moment venue, I do it. I always say whose model it is, if I
know. I don't give diagrams away, but I will say where they can be
(legally) found, if I know.
----- In an organized, but informal, non-commercial venue (e.g. my monthly
local folding sessions), I usually don't ask for permission, but I do say
whose model it is, and don't give diagrams or send diagrams unless I
have/get permission, or try my best to get it first, or it has been posted
online by the designer or their associates. I have been known to copy a
diagram from a book for one person, or very occasionally a few people, whom
I folded the model with or whom I know to be pretty honest people who
aren't going to put it up for sale on Ebay; I always include the info as to
Title, Author, Page#, so people know where it came from.
----- In an organized, commercial venue (where I'm getting paid to teach,
and/or people pay to attend), I will probably not teach a model if I can't
get permission from the designer or their representative. I also won't give
diagrams away without permission. Note, I said "probably". If I've really
tried to get permission and have been unsuccessful in contacting anyone who
could give it, then I might *consider* teaching it, and giving credit to
the designer, of course, and only if the organizers of the event are OK
with that. But usually, I just wouldn't teach that model; I'd find
something else that doesn't require me to break my rules.
----- I feel this follows the Golden Rule of doing to others as you would
have them do to you. I don't think I'm going to hurt anyone by following
these rules.
