Origami Tsuki and diplomas Just to add to this thread, though not directly origami, the wells in many old houses in Japan have a small niche for storing important papers. Sumi ink, made from soot, is water-proof, so keeping documents in the well would not damage them, but significantly reduced the risk of them being destroyed in a fire - a very common occurrence in old Japanese wooden, thatched homes.
I don't have academic evidence of this, but have been told it by many people while living in Japan, and seen lots of wells with their niches, and old, well-preserved (no pun intended) documents. Cheers Clare Perth Origami Group Western Australia
