Sorry, no reference of any kind but I’ve always been told that it goes back to ‘ancient’ history.
In the beginning there was white paper only, very expensive so only monasteries could afford it. Monks used paper strips with painted on texts to decorate their monastery for special worshipping sessions. Later they started to fold the strips and then put texts on. This is how origami started and why the paper is only coloured on one side. I don’t know if it’s true but it’s a nice story so I never verified.
