1. On this point I can guarantee you that Orion is at least 5x faster than
WebSphere - it is an absolute dog for performance from personal experience
(perhaps IBM is trying to convince you to buy some 'big iron' to run it on).
I know there were some benchmarks of Orion around 0.7 against WebLogic that
were very favourable, but now WL has 5.x out and Orion has 1.x out - both of
which I'm sure have performance improvements. I'm sure the Orion team will
do a benchmark soon.
2. I run Orion on Linux and have found it relatively stable. Th only time it
crashes are JVM crashes, and I'll bet that's the Sun JDK1.2.2 JVM on Linux
(which is probably the least stable JVM). However I have a simple PERL
script that just brings the server right back up - it runs for weeks. IBM /
Sun's JDK1.3 for Linux should get rid of all these problems. Apart from that
the only time it dies is when it runs out of memory, but I'm fairly sure
that's just my extensive use of Xerces/Xalan (memory pigs + big memory
leaks) - I've never seen Orion leak memory when you're not using those two.
Hope this helps,
Mike
