--hello,
at my last job i was checking out app servers for my
team, and spoke to weblogic about their product. to
my astonishment they wanted $5k in licensing fees just
for dev licenses, so that i and my developers could
learn the product (and that is before paying ~$10k/cpu
for production). i recall having a long,
philosophical discussion with a salesperson about the
stupidity of such a policy.
it was about this time that i discovered orion (this
was about the 0.8.4 stage i think). we have found
that orion is very stable and very fast. in fact,
orion works so well and is so unobtrusive that we
often forget that it is there. our shop is developing
on it, and when we launch we'll gladly pay for a
production license. i cannot recommend it more
highly. don't worry about the price -- if you want to
pay double, you're still getting a bargain.
