I suggest using the Sprinta driver from Inet software - http://www.inetsoftware.de
 
The driver supports MS SQL Server 6.5, 7 & 2000 and are scalable.  A colleague of mine has also had similiar problems with the jdbc-odbc bridge.  For best performance, a native driver (such as Sprinta) is crucial.
