Greetings to the Orion list, I am a retired mailman living in San Francisco, CA, and have been an Orion List reader for a few years. Recently I obtained what appears to be an old Jewish coin. Looking at Meshorer _Jewish Coins of the Second Temple Period_ the coin seems to my untrained eye similar to those of the Bar-Kochba War, particularly coin numbers 178 181 and 199 201. Photos of the coin can be seen at:
http://www.sohncom.org/coin/2index.html About 7 years ago I became interested in the Biblical languages and have acquired a reading knowledge of Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek. I have attempted to read the inscriptions on the coin. The left side of the obverse seems to read "YSRAL/Israel" in paleo-Hebrew letters but the right side is beyond my limited abilities. The inscription on the reverse also eludes me. Because the coin is in such good condition I'm thinking it could be a reproduction. Any help from the members of this list would be much appreciated.
