Dear Walter, > You mentioned that Ezekiel is dated by a reference to Persians, how about > his mention of Daniel ? The book of Daniel is believed to be dated ca 164 > BCE, so evidently parts of Ezekiel may possess redactions of the Hellenistic > era ?
Ezekiel mentions Daniel, Noah and Job together as three righteous men of old (as I recall). Job is thought by some to be a Hellenistic Era composition (certainly by 180 BCE when he is mentioned in the book of Sirach). As for Daniel, it may be over-simplifying matters to date the book to 165-163 BCE. This date certainly applies to Daniel 8-12 at least, possibly Daniel 7 as well (if one sees references to Judas Maccabaeus there -- the matter is debated). But the novelistic court stories of Dan. 1-6 have no certain indication of being of late (Maccabean Era) date, and likely go back to the third century BCE (or earlier). Torrey, for instance, interprets Ezekiel's reference to Daniel to refer to Dan. 1-6, which he views as having been written c. 250 BCE, and Ezekiel around the same time -- I may be off a decade or two, as I'm away from my sources. So one could have a sequence Dan. 1-6 (and possibly other Daniel stories) --> Ezekiel --> Dan. 7-12 additions.
