Naxals ambush cops in Orissa again, kill 24

Bhubaneshwar/New Delhi: At least 17 police officials died when a landmine
planted by Naxals exploded in Orissa's Malkangiri district, some 600 km
south of Bhubaneshwar.

Agencies report the Special Operations Group members were travelling in a
van on the Kalimela-Motu road when the landmine exploded under them. Two of
the dead were police inspectors. The first reports from the spot had put the
number of dead at 24.

CNN-IBN Correspondent Jajati Karan reports the police officials were
ambushed in a place called NB126 while they were searching for Naxals who
had attacked a local politician's house on Monday night.

Naxals blocked the road with a fallen tree and then fired on the police
officials when they got out to clear the path. The landmine was triggered
during the firing.

One June 29, as many as 35 personnel of Andhra Pradesh and Orissa police
drowned when Maoists fired on a boat carrying them in Malkangiri district.

Top bureaucrats meet on Naxal menace

Home Secretary Madhukar Gupta on Wednesday held a meeting with chief
secretaries and police chiefs of Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Andhra Pradesh and
Orissa to review the Maoist situation.

Gupta said the meeting reviewed the progress of implementation of the
integrated action plans aimed at curbing Maoist influence in these states.

"In overall terms, visible improvement has been seen in various parameters
relating to the security situation in the Naxal-affected states this year as
compared to last year barring a few major incidents," Gupta told reporters
after the meeting.

"It was felt that substantial progress has been achieved on the
infrastructure front. The connectivity situation in these districts is being
given focused attention. On the issue of filling up of vacancies in the
state police, the concerned states have initiated action for filling up
existing vacancies and raising specialised forces," he added.

Gupta and Special Secretary, Internal Security, M L Kumawat spoke to the
Chief Secretary of Orissa and assured help from the Centre, a spokesperson
said in Delhi.
